How to record on Apple Watch, then transcribe it
Updated October 2026 ·
To record on Apple Watch and get a transcript, record with Voice Memos or a recorder app on the watch, then let your iPhone do the transcribing. With Voice Memos, the recording syncs through iCloud and you read the transcript on an iPhone 12 or later. With an app such as Fenwrite, you tap Record on the watch (or its complication), tap Stop, and the recording goes to your iPhone, which writes the transcript with speaker labels and a summary. If the iPhone isn't nearby, the recording waits on the watch.
Why record on your wrist?
Because the phone isn't always out. A watch recording is a tap away when the phone is in a bag, in another room, or would look rude on the table: a quick idea on a walk, a corridor conversation, a doctor's instructions, a site visit with your hands full. It's also discreet in the good sense, not hidden, just not in the way. You still tell people you're recording.
Option 1: Voice Memos on Apple Watch
Voice Memos is built in. Open it on the watch, tap the red record button, and tap again to stop. The recording syncs to your other Apple devices through iCloud (Voice Memos needs to be turned on in your iCloud settings). Open it on your iPhone to read the transcript, which Apple offers on iPhone 12 and later, in English.
It's free and reliable. As on the phone, you get the words without speaker labels or a summary, which is fine for notes to yourself.
Option 2: A recorder app built for the watch
Third-party apps add things Voice Memos doesn't: a one-tap complication, recording on the watch alone with a later sync, and transcripts that know who's speaking. As of October 2026, note takers with an Apple Watch app include Just Press Record ($6.99 on the App Store; its listing says it records independently on the watch and syncs later), Notta (per its App Store listing), Granola (whose watch app launched in July 2026) and Fenwrite. Otter's App Store listing names iPhone and iPad only.
Recording on Apple Watch with Fenwrite
- Install Fenwrite on your iPhoneThe watch app comes with it. If it doesn't appear on the watch, install it from the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Open Fenwrite on the watch and tap RecordAllow the microphone the first time. Or add the Record with Fen complication to a watch face: one tap opens the app and starts recording.
- Keep the watch near the voicesRest your wrist on the table or hold it a little closer to whoever is talking.
- Tap StopIf your iPhone is nearby, the watch sends the recording straight away. If not, it says it's saved and sends it when the iPhone is back in range.
- Read it on your iPhoneYour iPhone transcribes the recording with speaker labels and writes the summary and to-dos, then it appears in your notes.
Tips for clear audio from a watch
- Closer wins. The watch microphone is small and tuned for your own voice. It's great for you talking and for a conversation across a small table; for a meeting room, a phone in the middle is better.
- Keep your sleeve out of the way. Fabric brushing over the watch is loud on a recording.
- Rest your wrist. On the table, near the person talking, rather than moving around.
- Test before something long. Do a two-minute test with your wrist down, the way you'll actually hold it, and check the result on your phone.
- Watch the battery. Recording uses power; start a long session with a charged watch.
What happens between the watch and the phone
Most watch recorders do the same dance: the watch records to its own storage, then hands the file to the iPhone over Apple's watch-to-phone connection. That transfer can happen at once or hours later, so the app needs to keep the file until the phone confirms it has it. That's the failure people complain about in watch apps ("lost recordings"), so it's worth testing whichever app you choose with the phone out of range.
Where Fenwrite fits
Fenwrite is our app. On the watch it's one big Record button and a complication. A recording made on the watch stays in its outbox until the iPhone confirms it has the file, so a missing phone doesn't lose anything; the watch shows how many recordings are waiting. On the iPhone, a watch recording gets the full treatment: a transcript with speaker labels (from a pass over the whole file), name suggestions, a summary, decisions and to-dos. Fenwrite's format is small, roughly 14 MB an hour, so transfers are quick.
Limits: the watch records, and the transcript is written once the recording reaches your iPhone and the iPhone is online. A watch recording follows your plan's per-recording limit (10 minutes on the free hour, 3 hours on Pro). There's no live transcript on the wrist. Fenwrite is coming soon to the App Store (iPhone and Apple Watch) and Google Play (Android).
Questions
Can Apple Watch record without the iPhone nearby?
Yes, with Voice Memos and with recorder apps built for it, Fenwrite included. Fenwrite keeps the recording on the watch until the iPhone is in range, then sends it over; nothing is lost if you left the phone at home.
Does the transcription happen on the watch?
Not with Fenwrite: the watch records, and the iPhone writes the transcript and the summary once the recording reaches it, using its internet connection.
Does Otter have an Apple Watch app?
As of October 2026, Otter's App Store listing names iPhone and iPad as supported devices, not Apple Watch, and its pricing page doesn't mention one. Apps that list an Apple Watch app include Voice Memos, Just Press Record, Notta, Granola and Fenwrite.
How long can I record on Apple Watch?
It depends on the app and your watch's storage and battery. In Fenwrite, a watch recording can be as long as your plan allows for one recording: 10 minutes on the free hour, up to 3 hours on Pro.
