Privacy policy

Fenwrite is made and operated by Bitfuzed (PVT) LTD (“Bitfuzed”, “we”). This policy covers the app on iPhone, Apple Watch and Android and explains what happens to your recordings and your information. The short version: recordings are kept on your phone, audio is sent only to be transcribed, the words are backed up only if you sign in, we show no ads, and we don’t sell or share your data.

Your recordings

When you record, the audio is saved on your phone. To write it down, Fenwrite sends the audio to AssemblyAI, the speech-to-text service we use:

• While you record, the audio streams from your phone directly to AssemblyAI over an encrypted connection, using a short-lived pass our server issues. The words come back as you speak.
• For some recordings (one you paused, one whose connection dropped, one made on Apple Watch), the saved audio file is uploaded through our server to AssemblyAI to be transcribed again as a whole. Once your phone has saved that transcript, we ask AssemblyAI to delete it and the uploaded audio.

To write the summary, to-dos and name suggestions, the transcript’s text (not the audio) goes through our server to OpenAI. We ask OpenAI not to store it; under OpenAI’s API policy it may keep requests for up to 30 days to monitor abuse, and it doesn’t use API data to train its models.

Our server passes these requests along but doesn’t keep your audio, transcripts or summaries.

What stays on your phone

Your recordings’ audio, transcripts, summaries, speaker names and settings are stored on your device. You can delete any recording, or all audio, in the app. Fenwrite works without an account.

If you sign in (optional)

You can sign in with Apple (on iPhone), Google or an email and password. We use Firebase Authentication, a Google service, which stores your email address, a user ID and, for Google sign-in, your account’s basic profile. With Sign in with Apple and Hide My Email, we get a private relay address from Apple.

While you are signed in, the text of your recordings (titles, transcripts, summaries, to-dos and speaker names) is backed up to Cloud Firestore, a Google Cloud database, under your user ID, so it comes back on a new phone. Audio is never backed up. Security rules allow only your signed-in account to read or write your backup.

What our server keeps

Our server (on Cloudflare) meters recording time so the free hour and Pro hours work. It keeps a random identifier for your installation, how many seconds you have recorded, short-lived records of each recording session and transcription job, and daily totals without personal details. It does not keep your audio, transcripts or summaries.

Purchases

Fenwrite Pro is sold and billed by the App Store or Google Play; we never see your payment details. The app shows our server the store’s proof of purchase (the App Store’s signed transaction or Google Play’s purchase token) so the server can check it with Apple or Google and give you Pro’s recording time. If you are signed in, the purchase is also linked to your account so Pro works on your other phones. The server keeps only what that needs: the plan and when it ends, the transaction ID or a fingerprint of the purchase token (with the token itself, to check renewals and refunds), your user ID if linked, and the installations it was checked on.

Widgets and Apple Watch

Widgets show a small summary of your latest notes from the app on your device. The Apple Watch app records on the watch and sends the audio to your iPhone over Apple’s phone-to-watch connection; from there it is handled like any other recording.

What we don’t do

• No ads, and no advertising identifier.
• No tracking across other apps or websites.
• We don’t sell, rent or share your data for marketing.

Keeping and deleting your data

Data on your phone stays until you delete it or uninstall the app. Signing out removes your notes from the phone once they are backed up (and deletes the audio, which isn’t backed up); signing in again brings the notes back. Your backup stays while your account exists. To delete your account, its backup, its purchase links and everything on your phone, open Fenwrite and go to Settings → Account → Delete account, or see how to delete your account. Deleting the account doesn’t cancel a subscription: cancel it in the App Store or Google Play.

Recording other people

Recordings often include other people’s voices. Please make sure everyone you record knows and agrees, as the law where you are may require.

Children

Fenwrite isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their information.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data. Write to us and we’ll help.

Changes

If this policy changes, we’ll update the date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the app.
