Fenwrite vs Apple Voice Memos: when is free enough?
Updated October 2026 ·
Use Voice Memos if you want a free, unlimited recorder that keeps your audio in sync across Apple devices and gives you a plain transcript (on iPhone 12 and later, in English). It's ideal for voice notes, single-speaker talks and anything where the audio is what you keep. Use Fenwrite when it matters who said what: it labels each voice live, suggests names, and writes a summary with decisions and to-dos, on iPhone, Apple Watch and Android. We make Fenwrite, and we'd still tell most people to try Voice Memos first.

Where Voice Memos is better
- It's free, with no allowance to watch and nothing to sign up for.
- It keeps and syncs your audio across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch through iCloud.
- It edits audio: trim, replace a section, keep the original.
- It stays with Apple. No third-party transcription service involved.
- It's already there, on every iPhone.
Where Fenwrite is better
- Who said what. Each voice gets a label as it's heard, and names are suggested when people say them.
- The summary writes itself: the gist, key points, what was decided and the to-dos with owners, ready to tick off.
- Android too, so a mixed team can share one way of working.
- One place for the follow-up: rename speakers, merge two labels that turned out to be one person, and share the summary and transcript as text with names and times.
Which should you use?
Ask what you'll do with the recording afterwards. If you'll listen back, or you mostly want the audio kept safe, Voice Memos is the right tool and costs nothing. If you'll read it, act on it or send it to someone, the transcript's structure matters more than the audio: who said what, what was decided, who's doing what by when. That's the job Fenwrite is built for.
You may well want both: Voice Memos for quick notes to themselves, Fenwrite for meetings, classes and interviews. Our guide Does Voice Memos transcribe? covers how to get the most out of Apple's app.
Who should pick which
Choose Voice Memos for voice notes, single-speaker recordings, anything you want to keep as audio, and whenever you'd rather nothing left Apple's ecosystem.
Choose Fenwrite for conversations with more than one person where you need who said what, a summary and the to-dos, or if you use Android. Fenwrite is coming soon to the App Store (iPhone and Apple Watch) and Google Play (Android).
Questions
Is Voice Memos good enough for meetings?
For a one-to-one, often yes. For a group, the missing piece is who said what: Apple's description of Voice Memos doesn't mention speaker labels, and it doesn't write a summary or action items.
Can Fenwrite transcribe my existing voice memos?
No. Fenwrite transcribes what it records, on the phone or Apple Watch; it doesn't import audio files.
Which is more private?
Voice Memos keeps everything with Apple and your iCloud. Fenwrite keeps audio on the phone and never backs it up, but sends it to a speech-to-text provider (AssemblyAI) to be transcribed and the text to OpenAI for the summary. If nothing leaving your Apple devices matters most, use Voice Memos.
Is there a Voice Memos for Android?
No; it's Apple-only. Android phones have their own recorders, and Fenwrite runs on Android as well as iPhone.
